The Future Sees You was conceptualized with the aim of launching a new design campus. The installation was designed to share the hopes and dreams of students with the public. To achieve this, the eyes of these young creatives were filmed, capturing the intimate beauty of their optimism. This unique approach to public art installations was a key factor in the project's success during the White Night Festival.
The installation was back projected out of a building, making it the only project to do so during the festival. Over 17 individual projections were projected through 32 windows of the building, creating a unique story of multiple visual engagements. This innovative approach to projection art was a key factor in the installation's success.
The project relied on a range of equipment, including 20 projectors, 21 iMacs, and 32 windows. A team of 20 was required to set up the installation, which spanned five stories. Adobe software was used to create the individual films, each of which was limited to a duration of no more than five seconds. This constraint challenged the designers to communicate emotion in a very short timeframe.
The installation was part of White Night Melbourne, an evening art festival. It was presented on Flinders Street, directly opposite the iconic Federation Square. The event lasted for 12 hours, from 7pm to 7am. The installation was viewed from the ground, with the public encouraged to engage with the eyes and interpret their symbolism.
The Future Sees You presents the optimism of young creatives. Through 30 windows over five levels, the eyes blaze through a vibrant spectrum of colour, at times appearing to follow the crowd as they look out with confidence into the night. This dynamic visual story is a testament to the future thinkers, innovators, designers, and artists of the world.
The project faced several challenges, including ensuring that each projection worked coherently together as one story. Many iterations of each individual projection were required to ensure the vibrancy of the colour and emotion of the eyes was communicated as one final visual engagement. Despite these challenges, The Future Sees You was awarded Silver in A' Advertising, Marketing and Communication Design Award in 2019, a testament to its outstanding expertise and innovation.
